In this project our client had nice, big room but quite dark and not well designed. He wanted shelving units for his big library and the same time he needed some extra storage. The room had chimney on the front wall and typical alcoves on the sides. We didn’t want to create the typical alcove shelves so we created shelving units which are at the same time modern and match the traditional English style. As the room doesn’t have much day light we added spotlights above each cabinet.
The idea of this project was to achieve bright sitting room with maximum storage space. The same time the storages had to look light and take minimum of the room space.
At first stage we fitted spotlight to the ceiling. The ceiling spotlight and cabinet spotlights are now operated by double dimmer switch which helps to create the right atmosphere in the room.
The second step was to redesign the tiles on the floor. The Victorian Tiles was already laid in the whole room. The décor run around the room. The new built shelving units would cover up the beautiful Victorian design so we retiled some of the floor and run the décor just in front of the cabinets.
The existing blue colour on the walls made the room look cold and dark. We decided to paint it light and very warm colour matching the floor tiles.Very light, brown dulux paint freshened up the room and give nice, cozy feeling.
The shelving units were build and fitted to the walls from MDF. MDF is the great materials to create any kind of storages in your home. This is a wood composite material, primarily softwood, bonded with a synthetic resin, which is usually formaldehyde-based. Although it has been commercially available since the 1960s, its use has become significant only in the last decade or so. In our project we did not fit back boards in the bottom cabinets section in order to achieve an extra storage space behind the units.
One coat of undercoat and Two coats of White Gloss Dulux wood paints was applied
To all built cabinets and shelves. Coving and skirting boards were replaced and also painted white.
We also changed the look of the fireplace. To warm up the room we tiled the floor with red slate tiles and walls with real bricks. Now, it look like a real focus and add more character to the room. It is worth to spent some time on upgrading your
existing fireplace. By adding new details you can change completely the look of the whole room. An extra socket was installed on side wall in the fireplace, so an electrical heater can be use in winter time to warm up the room.
